I'm actually considering going down a bit later and taking a look. Would make one hell of a replacement for the Jetta. Plus, since my father owned and wrenched on one while I was growing up, I know what it takes to keep them on the road (I actually have a decent idea of why it's not starting)

Can it be both CP and NP? It is cheap, but Jags make me nervous. But for $800 it is probably worth the risk.

Well this is from after ford took over and pumped a few billion into updating the factory, so the quality control is actually pretty good.
Worst case there has got to be $5-600 in scrap metal there or an easy $1-3K in parts.

That's a definite NP, if you have what it takes to get it running. I don't know why the seller lists it as both an XJ6 and a Vanden Plas. It's a Vanden Plas for sure, which makes it even more of a gem.

Does it really count as a separate model? I always thought it was the highest trim XJ as in "XJ6 - Vanden Plas"

It's a separate model. In 1996, the XJ lineup was:
- XJ6
-Vanden Plas
- XJR
- XJ12
In 1997, the 12cyl engine was retired and the XJR was put on hiatus, leaving just the XJ6 and Vanden Plas models.
In 1998, with the departure of the 6cyl engine and the introduction of the 8cyl, the XJ lineup became:
- XJ8
- Vanden Plas
- XJR
